OUR MISSION

Helping Light emerged as an organization following the devastation of the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The founders were alarmed that children were suffering debilitating and possibly permanent mental health damage from the impact of natural disasters and family tragedy. Helping Light’s original mission was to raise public awareness of the need for mental health intervention through education, live media events and strategic alliances with local, state and national non-profit organizations. The goal was to guide families and children to viable solutions to emotional and stress disorders.

Since its inception, Helping Light has been engaged in two dynamics to fulfill its mission. First, we conducted strategic research to identify the levels of mental health problems plaguing the children and adults of a post-Hurricane Katrina Mississippi Gulf Coast including the families of our Military who serve our country. Since Helping Light is based in a collective community where two major and active U.S. Military Bases are located, the men and women who serve and their families were included in our collective research.  Secondly, our research uncovered that post trauma can be spoken and unspoken, can be held inside ones persona and not often manifested in daily life. This trauma was not restricted to age, gender nor civilian or military individuals.

Now, in 2010, Helping Light has broadened its mission, not to minimize the therapeutic needs of families, but to offer a more comprehensive approach to improved outcomes for all our citizens. Research has convinced us that children, youth and adults need connections with experiences and learning opportunities that prepare them for the conceptual age. The benefits are both therapeutic and educational. Helping Light will offer new learning opportunities to mental health professionals, the business community, recent graduates, teens and children. Organized around six conceptual skills, Helping Light will build on the knowledge, skills and attributes people have developed through traditional educational paths.
